The way end-users consume video content is changing. Even though TV still takes a central role in the way we consume video content, viewing behaviors now are radically different from what they were just a few years ago. With video content being available on a wide range of devices, (traditional) TV operators can’t stay behind. Multiscreen (also referred to as ‘TV Everywhere’) is the solution. At Divitel we can add TV Everywhere capabilities to your existing video platforms – or design and build a multiscreen TV solution from scratch – allowing your end-users access to video content on multiple different devices, including mobile, web-based and streaming boxes. What is multiscreen and how does it work?
Essentially, multiscreen (also written as ‘multi screen’ or ‘multi-screen’) refers to the ability to display video content on a range of different devices. By transforming the content into multiple bit rates, formats and resolutions, the content is available on a wide range of devices such as the television set, mobile phones, tablets, computers, laptops and game consoles.
Operators can deliver video content through their managed network, or over-the-top with the use of a third party transport service. Generally speaking, TV Everywhere technology makes use of unicast IP delivery.
Multiscreen vs. OTT
The terms ‘multiscreen’ and ‘OTT‘ are often used interchangeably. However, OTT refers to the mode of transportation, where video content is distributed over the open internet as a standalone product, while multiscreen specifically refers to the encoding and transformation technology needed to display video content on multiple devices. Both techniques are often used together.
What does multiscreen mean for your video business?
End-users expectations of a TV or video service have evolved: No longer is the average consumer happy with a TV as their sole access to TV and video content. End-users expect access to their TV service at home, on the road, on vacation and even outside. They’re not just watching on a traditional television set, but expect access to your service on their phones, computers, tablets and a range of streaming devices. By adding multiscreen capabilities to your video delivery network, Divitel helps you meet – and surpass – these customer expectations, for today and tomorrow.
